Today – or rather, yesterday since it’s two in the morning – was New Student Success Day at Columbia State. I got to tour the college campus, get my parking permit, meet my fellow students, eat pizza, have some really good chocolate cake, and be completely overwhelmed by the huge undertaking that is going to college.
I mentally took a step back and thought about all the things that are going to change. My learning style, my study habits, my sleeping habits (I’m virtually nocturnal right now), and, most importantly, my writing schedule.
So much will be different. I won’t be able to go to school in my pajamas, or rock back in my chair. I can’t check my email “really fast” during math. I can’t run up to the kitchen to have a second bowl of cereal while I read my English book if I’m still hungry after breakfast.
If all goes according to plan, in two years I’ll be leaving home altogether to go to a big university in another state. That is going to be a huge undertaking. If nothing else, I’m a family girl. I love being surrounded by my family (most of the time!).
These two years at Columbia State will sort of be my test run. I have to see just how much guts I’ve got, and if I can really make it on my own in another state. I think I’ll be all right. I love a challenge and you know what they say – go big or go home!
